Disconnected lifestyle
Me (Damini) and Swastik have the same story. We have long working hours on weekdays; we have to spend our time at the office, watching screens and laptops, and we find that we are less connected with the nature we live in.
And because of that, we have
Unproductive weekends 📱. We spend our time watching movies, scrolling through Instagram and other social media, sleeping all day, and doing nothing meaningful. And we found that we are gradually becoming lazy pigs, and we are not appreciating the environment that we are living in.
We asked ourselves questions: If we are facing these issues, maybe Others are facing them too..
So we Asked Ourself 2 important questions:How !!
1 How Is it impacting others' lifestyles? Answer we Got Increasing Mental stress, anxiety, and lowering overall well-being, Changing Food Habits, and more.
2. How are our activities impacting the Environment? Answer we Got Since we stayed occupied with screens, green spaces were quietly being replaced by buildings and commercial complexes.
Since fewer people actively cared for trees 🌳, it became easier to cut them down for material and economic benefits 💰 with little resistance.
Why It Matters
In today’s fast-paced world ⏳, people are increasingly disconnected from nature 🌿. Busy lifestyles leave little time to care for the environment, and as a result, we are directly and indirectly contributing to its deterioration 🌍⚠️
At the same time, weekends—especially Saturdays and Sundays—often go underutilized or are spent on unproductive habits 📱. Adopt a Tree 🌱 aims to transform this time into something meaningful by encouraging individuals to engage with nature and take responsibility for it.
By adopting a tree 🌳, users begin a small yet powerful journey of care, awareness, and contribution 🤝. What starts as a Simple action gradually builds into a habit, and over time, this habit evolves into sincerity and a sense of duty 💚.
Our goal is to create a ripple effect 🌊—where responsible actions today inspire a culture of environmental care that is naturally followed by future generations 👨👩👧👦.
Because when people start caring for nature, even in small ways, they begin shaping a better and more sustainable tomorrow 🌏✨.
What it does
Adopt a Tree 🌱 is a digital platform that connects people with nature by enabling them to take temporary ownership of trees in their neighborhood 🌍 and actively participate in their care.
The platform allows users to:
1. Adopt a Tree: Choose and adopt a nearby tree for a few days or weeks, creating a personal sense of responsibility and connection with nature.
2. Learn & Explore 📚: Access detailed information about the tree, including its history, species, soil conditions, ecological importance, and the type of flora and fauna it supports 🐦🌿.
3. Contribute to the Community ♻️: Donate books or reusable items through the platform, promoting a culture of sharing and sustainability 🤲
Create a Sustainable Cycle 🔄:
For every adoption and contribution, new trees are planted 🌱—encouraging a continuous cycle of responsibility, awareness, and environmental impact across generations 👨👩👧👦.
By combining technology 💻 with environmental action 🌏, Adopt a Tree nurtures empathy ❤️, responsibility, and long-term care for nature.
Impact It can create :
📢 Awareness Impact:: Increases understanding of trees, biodiversity, and environmental issues among everyday people.
🌿 Environmental Consciousness: Makes people more mindful of their surroundings and daily actions affecting nature.
💚 Culture of Responsibility:Encourages a shift from ignorance to active care for the environment.
👨👩👧👦 Cultural Shift Across Generations:Creates a culture where caring for nature is passed down and becomes a norm.
How we built it
Researched user behavior and environmental gaps 🌍
Analyzed how people are disconnected from nature due to busy lifestyles and identified the need for a simple, engaging solution.Designed meaningful user actions 🌱
Defined key features like tree adoption, learning, and contribution that users would actually engage with in their daily lives.
Damini Pahuja, my team member and a designer, created some designs for the app.Integrated AI for smart information 📚🤖
Used AI models to generate and deliver detailed, easy-to-understand information about each tree—covering species, history, soil, and ecological impact.Built a location-based system 📍
Developed a platform to help users discover and adopt trees nearby, creating a real-world connection through a digital interface.Created a contribution mechanism ♻️
Added features for donating books and reusable items, linking environmental responsibility with community sharing.Simplified impact visualization 🌏
Designed the platform to show how each adoption and contribution leads to tree planting and long-term environmental benefits.Focused on scalable technology 💻
Built the application in a way that can expand across different locations, making it easy to onboard more users and trees over time.Challenges we ran into
Limited compatibility of AI models 🤖
Not every energy-efficient AI model was directly usable within a web application, so we had to carefully evaluate and select models that fit our platform requirements.Coordination challenges across the team 🕒
Team members were in different locations with busy schedules, making it challenging to find suitable times for collaboration during the 2-day weekend.Scope vs. time constraints ⏳
The problem we chose to tackle was quite large, so we had to prioritize features, streamline research, and present the solution in a way that was achievable within the limited timeframe.Accomplishments that we're proud of
High-energy, positive team collaborations! We were able to meet relatively frequently, including excellent brainstorming before we started prototyping/implementing ideas -- and multiple review/feedback sessions as the weekend progressed.
Participations in various hackathon workshops and the Game Night!
What we learned
We learned that clarity matters the most both while shaping an idea and while pitching it.
Asking the right questions Why, What, and How makes a huge difference. We realized that most people focus on what and how, but rarely question why, which is actually the foundation of any strong idea.
One of the biggest takeaways for us was learning the art of asking “why”, as it helps uncover real problems, refine solutions, and build something truly meaningful.
Go To Market Strategy
Phase 1: At this phase, we are planning to build Physical Interactions with Owners and the Interested Audience. So we can understand their real pain points, behaviors, and expectations. This will help us validate our idea, gather feedback, and refine our solution based on actual user needs rather than assumptions. Additionally, we aim to build early trust, create awareness, and form a strong initial community around our product.
Phase 2: Converting it into tech, we will develop an app-based platform that enables users to practice this activity at scale, starting locally and gradually expanding globally. At this stage, our primary focus will be on building traction by onboarding early users, driving engagement, and creating a strong user base. We will leverage initial community insights to refine the platform, ensuring it delivers real value while attracting and retaining our target audience.
Phase 3. At this stage, we will be onboarding and promoting sustainable startups and businesses, while strengthening the ecosystem to support long-term economic growth. Our approach focuses on enabling and sustaining a circular economy, where resources are efficiently utilized, waste is minimized, and value is continuously created across the system.
What's next for Adopt a Tree
We aim to solve the growing disconnect from nature, lack of environmental awareness, and limited individual contribution to sustainability.
In the coming future, we will address issues like low participation in green activities, urban environmental degradation, and the gap between people and sustainable businesses by creating a platform that makes it easy, engaging, and impactful for everyone to contribute to a greener planet. 🌱
