Inspiration
As a student, I have noticed that learners do not always receive explanations in a way they can easily understand. Getting immediate help can also be difficult when a teacher is unavailable. This inspired me to build AderaLearn, an AI-powered platform that guides students from learning a topic to testing their understanding.
What it does
AderaLearn gives students a connected learning experience. Students can create an account, select a subject, enter a topic, generate an AI lesson, ask follow-up questions through an AI Tutor, take an AI-generated quiz, and receive immediate feedback.
How we built it
I built AderaLearn using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I used Supabase Authentication for user accounts and sessions.
Google Gemini powers the lessons, tutor responses, and quizzes. A Supabase Edge Function securely communicates with Gemini so the API key is not exposed in the browser. I used GitHub for version control and deployed the website through Vercel.
Challenges we ran into
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that AderaLearn is more than an AI chatbot. It creates a complete learning journey:
Topic → AI lesson → Follow-up questions → AI quiz → Feedback
I successfully created working authentication, connected three learning features to real AI, protected the API key through a server-side function, added understandable error handling, and deployed a working prototype.
What we learned
I learned how to connect a web application to an AI model, protect API keys, use serverless functions, manage authentication, handle structured AI responses, use Git and GitHub, and deploy a functioning application.
Most importantly, I learned that educational AI should not simply give students answers. It should explain concepts clearly, encourage questions, and help learners test their understanding.
What's next for AderaLearn
With support from sponsors, volunteers, educators, and developers, AderaLearn can grow from a working prototype into a complete public learning platform.
Sponsorship could support AI and hosting costs, while volunteers could help improve the technology, design, lesson quality, accessibility, and number of supported subjects.
The long-term goal is to make AderaLearn available to more students and provide accessible, personalized education regardless of their location or available resources.
