Inspiration
• Creating a tool to help direct restoration efforts towards the communities most in need. • Revealing patterns in the types of violations to lead discussions on comprehensive strategies to improve Syracuse's infrastructure.
What it does
•Categorization and visualization of residential building code violations. •Identify neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by unsafe living conditions. •Highlight development opportunities to restore these communities.
How we built it
•Developed a parser to review Code Violation data. •Residential violations are filtered based on 11 issue types and by neighborhood. •Results are standardized as a number of violations per residency.
Challenges we ran into
• The description provided for some code violations was incomplete. The violation had to be deduced from the limited information provided.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• The successful categorization of over one million code violation reports in 2024. • The consolidation of this data into 11 issues, what strongly convey where they are most prevalent.
What we learned
•Hawley-Green has 2.9 violations per residency. •Skunk City has 0.38 fire code violations per residency. •Hawley-Green has 0.49 HVAC and electrical violations per residency. •North Valley has 0.23 lead violations per residency.
What's next for Addressing Housing Violations for Community Growth
• This software can be applied to track the changes in code violations over time. Statistical analysis can be performed on the correlation between code violations and other metrics. Some areas of interest include neighborhood crime rates, and real estate appreciation.
