Inspiration
Despite significant advancements in communication technologies, many rural and remote communities still lack reliable internet connectivity due to challenging terrain, sparse populations, limited infrastructure, and high deployment costs. This digital divide restricts access to education, healthcare, digital banking, e-governance, and employment opportunities. I was inspired to build a solution that helps network administrators intelligently select the most suitable connectivity technology for each village while incorporating Cisco networking concepts such as SD-WAN, NSO, Catalyst Center, and ThousandEyes.
What it does
Adaptive Rural Connectivity Orchestration (ARCO) is a web-based decision support system that assists network administrators in planning rural network deployments.
The administrator enters village details such as:
Population Terrain Budget Bandwidth Requirement Fiber Distance Nearby Connected Village
The rule-based Decision Engine evaluates Fiber, Wireless Mesh, and LEO Satellite using engineering constraints and recommends the most suitable connectivity technology.
After the recommendation:
Cisco NSO (Simulated) automatically generates deployment configurations. Cisco SD-WAN (Simulated) applies routing and QoS policies. Cisco Catalyst Center (Simulated) provides centralized network management. Cisco ThousandEyes (Simulated) continuously monitors network performance using latency, packet loss, jitter, and availability metrics.
How I built it
Frontend React.js HTML5 CSS3 JavaScript Backend FastAPI (Python) Database MySQL Decision Engine
I designed a rule-based Decision Engine that evaluates deployment feasibility using:
Terrain Budget Fiber Distance Bandwidth Requirement Nearby Connected Village
The engine filters out infeasible technologies and recommends the most appropriate deployment option based on engineering rules.

Challenges I ran into
Designing a transparent Decision Engine that could recommend the most suitable technology using engineering rules instead of AI. Understanding Cisco enterprise technologies such as SD-WAN, NSO, Catalyst Center, and ThousandEyes without access to enterprise infrastructure. Mapping Cisco technologies into a realistic deployment workflow while keeping the prototype simple. Balancing deployment cost, bandwidth, and feasibility when comparing multiple connectivity technologies. Simulating Cisco products in a way that accurately reflects their real-world responsibilities.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Built a complete end-to-end rural connectivity planning prototype. Designed a transparent and explainable rule-based Decision Engine. Successfully integrated simulated Cisco technologies into the deployment workflow. Developed a modular architecture that can be extended to include future technologies such as 5G and AI. Demonstrated how network planning, automation, centralized management, and performance monitoring can work together to support rural connectivity.
What I learned
Through this project, I gained practical knowledge of:
Rural network planning challenges. Engineering trade-offs between Fiber, Wireless Mesh, and LEO Satellite. Cisco SD-WAN for intelligent traffic management. Cisco NSO for automated network configuration. Cisco Catalyst Center for centralized network management. Cisco ThousandEyes for end-to-end network performance monitoring. Designing scalable and modular network architectures. Building full-stack applications using React, FastAPI, and MySQL.
What's next for Adaptive Rural Connectivity
I plan to enhance the project by:
Integrating real Cisco APIs instead of simulated components. Adding AI-based predictive network maintenance using historical network metrics. Supporting IoT applications for smart villages, such as agriculture, healthcare, and water management. Including 5G as an additional connectivity option in the Decision Engine. Implementing disaster recovery and automatic failover mechanisms. Developing a cloud-based centralized management platform for monitoring thousands of villages. Scaling the solution from individual villages to district, state, and nationwide deployments. Strengthening security with authentication, role-based access control, HTTPS, audit logging, and secure API authentication.
