Inspiration
We wanted to build an intelligent, personalized assistant (ADAPTIVE AI) that can smoothly answer user requests, analyze images, and handle audio inputs—all within a fast, cross-platform mobile and web experience.
What it does
Smart Dashboard & AI Assistance: Allows users to interact with an AI model powered by Google Gemini for text, voice, and image tasks.
Google OAuth Sign-In: Provides easy, secure login via Google Auth managed by Supabase.
Protected Data Access: Ensures user data and dashboard features are locked safely behind authenticated sessions.
How we built it Frontend: Built with Expo React Native and Expo Router to serve the web application on ports 8081/8082. Backend: Created a Node.js and Express API server running on port 5000. Authentication: Integrated Supabase Auth to manage Google OAuth logins and issue session tokens. Cloud & Tools: Developed entirely inside GitHub Codespaces and managed workspace packages using pnpm.
Challenges we ran into Dynamic Port Conflicts: Expo would sometimes launch on port 8082 when port 8081 was already occupied, causing frontend-to-backend connection mismatches. OAuth Redirect & 404 Errors: Handling callback URL query parameters (?code=...) cleanly without triggering router page errors. Missing Auth Headers: Making sure frontend requests attached the Supabase Bearer token so the backend wouldn't reject API calls with "Authentication required".
Accomplishments that we're proud of 100% Type Safety: Passed full frontend and backend TypeScript checks without errors. All Tests Passing: Successfully passed all 9/9 backend authentication unit tests. Seamless Auth Flow: Completely resolved the authentication error banner and achieved a smooth, single-click Google Sign-In experience.
What we learned How to dynamically adapt frontend API client request URLs to handle changing development server ports (8081 vs 8082) in GitHub Codespaces. How to properly listen to Supabase auth state changes (onAuthStateChange) within Expo Router. How to securely pass and validate Bearer access tokens between a React Native frontend and an Express backend API.
What's next for ADAPTIVE AI Adding enhanced multi-modal AI capabilities (expanding voice interactions and camera/image analysis). Deploying the Express API backend and Expo Web frontend to production hosting environments. Introducing personalized adaptive learning features based on user interaction history.
