Inspiration

Every student learns differently, but traditional learning platforms often provide the same learning experience to everyone. Students struggle to understand complex concepts, identify their weaknesses, prepare exam-oriented answers, and manage revision effectively.

This inspired us to build ADAPTIQ, an AI-powered personalized learning platform designed to transform ordinary study materials into an intelligent learning experience. Our goal is to help students learn at their own pace, understand concepts deeply, and prepare confidently for examinations.

What it does

ADAPTIQ brings multiple intelligent learning features together in one platform:

  • Multimodal Learning: Processes learning materials such as PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, diagrams, and videos.
  • AI-Powered Tutor: Provides explanations grounded in uploaded study materials, with source references to relevant pages, slides, or video timestamps where available.
  • Adaptive Assessment: Lets students select a course, topic, question type, difficulty level, and question count before starting a test.
  • Smart Question Bank: Generates separate downloadable PDFs of exam-oriented 2-mark and 16-mark questions with answers.
  • Learning Twin: Tracks topic-level mastery using actual student assessment performance.
  • Learning Graph: Visualizes concepts and prerequisite relationships to guide students through their learning journey.
  • Personalized Study Plan: Helps students prioritize topics according to their learning needs.
  • Spaced Revision: Supports reviewing concepts at planned intervals to improve retention.
  • Misconception Repair: Helps students recognize misunderstandings and practice the concepts they find difficult.
  • Evaluation and Benchmarks: Supports testing retrieval quality, answer faithfulness, answer relevance, personalization, and learning outcomes.
  • Authentication and Security: Aims to protect user accounts, uploaded materials, and learning records through authentication and appropriate data-access controls.

Together, these features aim to create a continuous learning cycle: learn, practice, evaluate, improve, and revise.

How we built it

We designed ADAPTIQ as a full-stack AI learning platform combining a web interface, backend services, AI-powered content processing, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and persistent learning data.

The content-processing pipeline extracts information from uploaded learning resources. The AI tutoring workflow retrieves relevant source content to support explanations and citations. The assessment system generates questions based on the student's selected preferences and can use assessment results to inform topic mastery and personalized recommendations.

The Smart Question Bank organizes generated questions and answers into exam-friendly formats. The Learning Twin and Learning Graph are designed to connect student progress with topic relationships, while the study planner, spaced revision, and misconception repair features support ongoing learning.

We also considered authentication, user-specific data isolation, and evaluation mechanisms as essential parts of building a reliable educational AI application.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was handling different types of educational content while preserving the meaning and context of the original material. Diagrams, tables, and video segments can contain important information that ordinary text extraction may miss.

Ensuring accurate citations was another challenge because students need to verify AI-generated explanations against the correct document page, slide, or video timestamp.

We also faced the challenge of designing meaningful personalization. Learning progress should reflect actual assessment results rather than arbitrary scores, and recommendations should target genuine knowledge gaps. Integrating tutoring, assessments, revision, progress tracking, and evaluation into one coherent application required careful planning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our vision of bringing multiple educational tools together into one personalized learning platform instead of making students switch between separate applications.

Our key accomplishments include designing an integrated learning experience around multimodal study materials, source-grounded AI tutoring, adaptive assessments, exam-oriented question generation, topic-level mastery, and personalized revision.

We are especially proud of focusing on trustworthy learning: answers should be traceable to source materials, learning progress should be based on real performance, and evaluation should help identify weaknesses in the system.

ADAPTIQ represents our effort to make AI more practical and meaningful for everyday student learning.

What we learned

We learned that building a useful AI educational product requires more than connecting a language model to a user interface. Reliable content extraction, relevant retrieval, accurate citations, secure data handling, and meaningful evaluation are equally important.

We also learned how assessment results can support personalized learning, why student mastery should be measured carefully, and how different AI capabilities can work together to support understanding, practice, feedback, and revision.

Most importantly, we learned that technology should adapt to students' needs rather than expecting every student to learn in the same way.

What's next for ADAPTIQ

Our next goal is to make ADAPTIQ more accurate, personalized, and reliable. We aim to improve diagram and video understanding, validate source citations, strengthen adaptive question generation, refine personalized study plans, and develop more effective spaced-revision strategies.

We also plan to expand evaluation with representative educational datasets, retrieval-quality metrics, personalization experiments, and security tests. Over time, we want to measure whether ADAPTIQ genuinely improves students' understanding and long-term retention.

Our vision is simple: turn scattered study materials into a connected learning journey that helps every student learn smarter, overcome weaknesses, and prepare with confidence.
