Inspiration

The inspiration for AdaptEd stems from the challenges faced by students in traditional learning systems. Many learners, particularly those who are neurodivergent or struggle with attention, find it hard to stay engaged with conventional educational methods. At the same time, real-world skills like coding, financial literacy, and soft skills often aren't adequately covered in typical curriculums. AdaptEd aims to solve these issues by offering a hands-on, inclusive learning experience designed to be accessible, engaging, and effective for all learners.

What it does

AdaptEd is an innovative project-based learning platform that focuses on building practical skills in areas like coding, financial literacy, and soft skills. The platform features:

  • ADHD-friendly design: Bite-sized tasks, focus timers, and visual trackers to improve engagement and attention.
  • Gamification: Rewards, badges, and leveling up to keep learners motivated.
  • Inclusive learning: Tailored for neurodivergent learners, with adjustable task sizes and customizable learning experiences.
  • Community collaboration: Learners can share experiences, provide feedback, and seek help in a supportive community.

How we built it

Since AdaptEd is still in the ideation phase, the focus has been on planning and research. The concept will be built using React for a dynamic, responsive user interface and Node.js for the backend to ensure scalability. The design will prioritize accessibility and inclusivity, using gamification to engage users while making learning fun and interactive. Plans are in place to integrate AI-driven personalization to tailor the learning experience to individual needs.

Challenges we ran into

As the project is still in the conceptual stage, the main challenge has been ensuring the balance between engagement and accessibility for neurodivergent learners. It’s important to design a platform that is both effective in skill-building and engaging enough to maintain attention. Researching how to integrate gamification in a way that aligns with educational goals while keeping it inclusive for all learners is another challenge that requires careful thought.

What I learned

In the process of developing AdaptEd, one of the key learnings has been the importance of inclusivity in design. Building an engaging platform for neurodivergent learners requires not only understanding their unique needs but also creating an environment where they feel motivated and supported. Additionally, gamification is a powerful tool for increasing focus and motivation, but it must be carefully integrated to support learning outcomes without overwhelming the learner.

What's next for AdaptEd

The next steps for AdaptEd include:

  • Moving from ideation to development, focusing on creating an accessible, ADHD-friendly user interface.
  • Integrating gamification elements and starting the creation of an interactive, project-based learning library.
  • Expanding the platform’s features with AI-based personalization to provide individualized learning paths.
  • Launching a beta version for feedback and testing, refining features based on real-user interactions.
