Inspiration

We were given a case on an individual who needed assistance with cutting their nails due to a physical disability. We understand how important independence is, and our aim is to make a device that would give back that sense of independence to this individual, even through the smallest tasks.

What it does

This set holds the hand in a mold with fabric/velcro attachments to hold the hand in place. The actual device is held in the other hand and can be put around a nail in order to file it down after the device is turned on.

How we built it

We used both OnShape and Fusion360 modeling softwares to create the different components. Our research consisted of reviewing many electric nail filers, as well as automatic nail trimmers for specs on size, torque, force, speed, and grit of a file.

Challenges we ran into

We were having trouble finding an actual motor and battery combination that would be small enough to fit in the device while still maintaining enough power for wired charging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our own progress in 3D CAD modeling, as we learned a lot with this new scenario.

What we learned

We learned a lot about how nail filers work, as well as different materials for optimal comfortability.

What's next for Adaptable Nail Filer Set

We hope that this design will be improved by adding different speeds, as well as a light for better viewing of the nail.
