Inspiration
I waste a lot of time on the computer – and much of the time, I don't even realize it. I just unconsciously open Youtube and start watching videos. So, I decided to build an app that will hold me accountable, and tell me exactly how I am spending my time. This goes beyond the apps I use, and also gives details on what websites I visit and what coding files I have open.
What it does
My app tracks the time that users spend on their computer, and notifies them daily with detailed info. This includes the applications that they use most often, the time they spend on those apps, and more specific info like the titles on the sites they visit.
How we built it
Activity Tracker is a python script built on top of the open source project ActivityWatch. It pulls event data from an ActivityWatch watcher and aggregates it. The script uses Twilio to automate messaging.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges include sparse documentation for ActivityWatch, as well as issues automating the python script to run daily.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of creating a finished application that I would genuinely use!
What we learned
I learned how to create cron jobs and automate scripts.
What's next for Activity Tracker
In the future, I hope to make a web app to pair with the script. In addition to this, I hope to integrate with AWS lamda so that users do not have to run the scripts locally.
