Inspiration
As a current university student in the tech world, I know the pain of the current job market. I applied to 300+ internships before landing a role and it was a pain to have to switch tabs to open Excel and write down the job details in order to track where and when I was applying to roles. This is why I decided to create Active Apply, a Chrome extension that autofills job details and submits it to your job spreadsheet in just 2 clicks.
What it does
It automatically autofills job details for you when you open the chrome extension, and all you have to do is click submit and it will automatically add the job to your job spreadsheet, making it easier then ever to track your job applications.
How we built it
I built it using the Next.js framework and React for the frontend and backend, TailwindCSS for styling, Stripe API for payments, OpenAI GPT API to get the job information from a website, Supabase for authentication and database, Prisma for the ORM, and Vercel for deployments.
Challenges we ran into
Active Apply is a complex app that has a lot going on, and naturally that comes with some complications. I had to build out a website and also a Chrome Extension that all worked well together. I ran into a challenge with seamless authentication between the two and also just making sure everything flowed nicely. I also struggled coming up with a way to automatically get the job information from the webpage while also being fast and efficient. Getting the payments set up were also a bit of a hassle, but eventually I overcame all the challenges and successfully built a useful app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of the app being released to the public and having over 10 active monthly users, with hundreds of applied jobs. People in the real world are finding value from my app and are successfully using it to keep track of their job applications. I am also proud that I was able to solve a real world problem I was having and contribute positively to the world.
What we learned
I learned a tremendous amount from this project. I learned how to use Next.js, Supabase, Stripe, and GPT API, and how to build a Chrome Extension for a website and have a seamless connection between the two. I also learned to think from the customer perspective, and always keep them in mind first and create solutions for their problems rather than having a solution and creating a problem.
What's next for Active Apply
Active Apply is fully ready and functioning, and now it is time to get some users! The main features are up and running, and I will be adding some small bug fixes and additional features as needed, but for now my main focus will be getting a user base and attending to their needs!
