Inspiration
The inspiration came from a lot of the organizing work being done my activists locally and throughout the country. Through my own observation I noticed that many activist organizations do not have control of their digital presence and rely on the whims of social media that sometimes work against them by tracking activist activity and turning over data to governments that punish activism based on whether it is inconvenient to government interests or not. I think that a new type of activist digital organizing is required in order to bring change to the country
What it does
My idea is for a website builder, like Squarespace, but with a distributed back end as a way to protect the privacy of activists and of supporters.
How we built it
I built a prototype blockchain back end using Javascript, React and Solidity, the front end mockup is in Figma
Challenges we ran into
I had never written a blockchain, and transparently didn't know that much about blockchain. Using some of the ethereum dependencies also was a bit more complicated than expected
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I built my first blockchain! I barely knew what it was at the beginning of the weekend so I'm really happy to be able to say that I was able to to build one
What we learned
I learned a lot about blockchain and distributed systems
What's next for ACT NET
I would like to continue to develop the idea, based off the research that I did this weekend I don't think it would be feasible to make the backends use blockchain, but I think the idea of keeping activist/organizer data secure is one that is worth pursuing.
