AChai – Transforming Tourism in Angola

Inspiration

Angola is one of Africa’s most beautiful and culturally rich countries, yet discovering and booking tourism services remains fragmented and difficult. Travelers often need to contact hotels, restaurants, tour operators, transportation providers, and experience organizers separately, with little digital integration.

We created AChaai to solve this problem by building a single platform where travelers can discover, compare, and book everything they need for their journey in one place. Our vision is to accelerate Angola’s digital tourism ecosystem while helping local businesses increase visibility and revenue.

What it does

AChai is a tourism marketplace that connects three main actors:

Travelers looking for hotels, restaurants, tours, experiences, and transportation.
Businesses such as hotels, restaurants, tour providers, and activity organizers.
Drivers who provide transportation services with real-time location tracking.

Through AChai, users can:

Search and discover destinations and experiences.
Book hotels, tours, and activities.
Reserve restaurant tables.
Request transportation services.
Manage bookings from a single platform.

Businesses can manage their listings, availability, pricing, and reservations through a dedicated dashboard.

How we built it

AChai was built using a modern, scalable cloud architecture designed to support a growing tourism marketplace.

Frontend

We developed the platform using:

TypeScript
Next.js 16 (React 19)
Tailwind CSS
Radix UI (shadcn/ui style components)

This stack allowed us to build a fast, responsive, and modern user experience across desktop and mobile devices.

Backend & Database

For the backend infrastructure, we chose:

AWS Aurora PostgreSQL
Prisma ORM
Vercel Functions

Aurora PostgreSQL provides a highly available and scalable database layer, while Prisma enables type-safe database access and rapid development.

Security

Security was a major priority from day one.

We implemented:

AWS RDS Signer for passwordless IAM authentication
JWT-based authentication
bcryptjs password hashing
Role-based access control for travelers, businesses, and drivers

This approach minimizes credential exposure while maintaining a secure authentication flow.

Hosting & Deployment

The platform is deployed on:

Vercel Functions
v0.app integration for rapid UI development

This allows us to deploy new features quickly while benefiting from automatic scaling and global content delivery.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a platform that serves multiple user types while keeping the experience intuitive.

Managing complex relationships between travelers, businesses, and drivers.
Designing flexible data models for different tourism services.
Building a responsive experience across mobile and web platforms.
