Inspiration
I was very frustrated with how "rigged" the SAT prep industry is; students pay thousands for tutors and books just to see mediocre results... and the student's who don't have that kind of money are stuck. As someone who had a lot of friends and family get SAT scores they didn't like because of their studying method, I knew I had to do something to combat this. I wanted to build something that made prepping for the Digital SAT fast, modern, and very cheap EVERY student.
What it does
AceIt is an iOS app designed specifically for the Digital SAT. It provides an easy way for students to prep, offering targeted practice and tools to help them focus exactly on what they need to improve, rather than just guessing what to study next. It actually gets to know what the user succeeds/struggles in, and provides questions that are BUILT to make them grow.
How I built it
I developed it natively for iOS and managed the whole deployment process through App Store Connect. I began by outlining the design in Figma, taking onboarding inspiration from popular apps like QUITTR. Once I knew how it should look and work, I began creating it in XCode with SwiftUI. Unlike most developers my age, the process did not include me heavily vibecoding everything 😅.
Challenges I ran into
Honestly, coding the app was only half the battle. The biggest challenge was the business side (specifically marketing and figuring out user conversion rates). It took a lot of testing, tweaking, and analyzing data to figure out how to actually get students to download the app and keep coming back to study.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The biggest highlight so far was getting featured on Fox 13 News back in January. Pitching to local media and then actually seeing the app I built get showcased on live TV was an unreal experience.
What I learned
I learned that being an app developer means you also have to be a marketer. I learned a ton about analyzing conversion funnels, pitching to news outlets, structuring a business, and what it really takes to grow an active user base from scratch.
What's next for AceIt - SAT Prep App
Scaling up. Right now, I'm incredibly focused on optimizing our conversion rates and rolling out new marketing strategies. I want to keep refining the app's core features to make it the absolute best Digital SAT prep tool on the App Store. I just applied to ZFellows and did an interview, so wish me luck on that process.
