Inspiration
The inspiration behind this project came from a recurring challenge faced by both leadership and sales teams: critical insights existed, but were fragmented across multiple tools and not available at the moment of decision-making. Users frequently had to switch between applications, such as Salesforce, Tableau, and Power BI, to piece together a comprehensive view of account performance, pipeline health, and customer risk. This constant context switching not only slowed decision-making but also reduced overall analytics adoption.
Leadership often relied on static dashboards or ad-hoc requests, while sales representatives had to leave their primary workspace in Salesforce to access reports elsewhere. This created a clear disconnect between where insights lived and where actions were taken.
The project was inspired by the need to eliminate this fragmentation and provide a single, unified view of trusted data directly within Salesforce. By embedding analytics into existing workflows and combining visual dashboards with a conversational Agent experience, the goal was to ensure that insights are contextual, easy to access, and immediately actionable—without forcing users to navigate multiple platforms or depend on developers for every new question.
At the same time, the initiative aimed to showcase how Tableau Next and Salesforce Data Cloud can work together to simplify complex enterprise analytics, turning multi-source, multi-object data into a seamless, intuitive experience for both executives and frontline users.
What it does
The solution delivers a unified Account Sales Overview experience that enables stakeholders to track and act on key business metrics such as: • Account performance and engagement • Lead conversion trends • Opportunity pipeline and deal progression • Customer health, churn signals, and adoption indicators
It provides multi-view dashboards tailored to different personas: • A high-level executive view for leadership to quickly assess performance, risks, and opportunities. • Embedded, role-specific views for sales representatives, allowing them to drill into details and take action directly from Account and Opportunity pages.
In addition, the solution introduces a conversational Agent experience for leadership, enabling them to retrieve trusted metrics instantly without waiting for new dashboards or developer intervention. This ensures faster insights, better decision-making, and higher data adoption across the organization.
How we built it
The project starts with data ingestion through Salesforce Data Cloud, where data from multiple Salesforce objects is unified into a single analytical foundation.
A semantic layer is then built within Data Cloud to connect these objects, ensuring a consistent and governed data model. Core business metrics are defined at this layer along with reusable calculated fields, allowing standardised logic to be shared across dashboards and charts.
On top of this semantic foundation, Tableau Next dashboards are created with a strong focus on simplicity, clarity, and usability. The dashboards are designed as multi-view experiences, serving both executive and operational users.
Finally, all dashboards are strategically embedded within Salesforce, such as on the Account Overview and Opportunity pages, ensuring insights are delivered exactly where users work. The Agent experience is layered on top of the same trusted semantic model, ensuring consistency between conversational responses and visual dashboards.
Challenges we ran into
One of the key challenges was simplifying complex, multi-object Salesforce data into a format that remained accurate while being easy to understand for non-technical users.
Designing dashboards that worked equally well for leadership and frontline sales teams required careful balance—too much detail overwhelmed executives, while overly summarised views limited actionability for sales reps.
Another challenge was ensuring metric consistency across dashboards and the Agent experience. This required strong governance within the semantic layer to avoid discrepancies between visual and conversational insights.
Embedding dashboards seamlessly within Salesforce without disrupting existing workflows also required thoughtful placement and performance optimisation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Successfully built a scalable semantic layer that acts as a single source of truth for all metrics.
• Delivered role-based, embedded dashboards that improved contextual usage and adoption.
• Enabled leadership to access on-demand metrics through an Agent, reducing dependency on developers.
• Demonstrated how Tableau Next can simplify complex enterprise analytics into intuitive experiences.
• Created a solution that balances strategic visibility and operational depth within the same platform.
What we learned
We learned that analytics adoption increases significantly when insights are embedded directly into user workflows, rather than accessed through standalone reports.
Defining metrics at the semantic layer early in the project helped avoid rework and ensured consistency across dashboards and conversational interfaces.
We also learned that leadership values speed and flexibility over perfect visuals—having instant access to trusted metrics via an Agent can be more impactful than waiting for new dashboards.
Finally, designing with clear user personas in mind proved critical to delivering meaningful and actionable insights.
What's next for Account Sales Overview
The next phase of the Account Sales Overview will focus on deeper intelligence and proactive insights. This includes: • Expanding the Agent capabilities to support follow-up questions, comparisons, and trend analysis • Introducing predictive signals for churn risk, deal slippage, and customer expansion opportunities • Enhancing personalisation so dashboards adapt dynamically based on user role and account context • Integrating additional data sources to provide a more holistic view of customer engagement and revenue impact
The long-term vision is to evolve the solution from a descriptive analytics tool into a proactive decision-support system that continuously guides sales and leadership toward better outcomes.
