People with disabilities have a right to meaningful employment,

but asking for workplace accommodations can be an intimidating and overwhelming process. I'm aiming to change that by "building bridges" to cross the gap between people with disabilities and their employers.

This web app makes it easy to understand what workplace accommodations might be helpful to you,

and can generate the request letter to send to your HR representative. After you fill out your demographic information, browse through the list of workplace barriers and choose ones that you feel are applicable to you. The system will then suggest potential accommodations for those barriers. Choose the options you like best and the system will write the request letter for you!

How I built it:

I am brand new to coding, so I focused on the design and concept structure using Figma. I look forward to finishing this project as I learn more about coding.

Issues I ran into:

I really wanted to submit it as a functional product but didn't have enough time to learn how to turn code into a tangible thing - my only exposure to learning code is in a vacuum. I also recognize that the app would need to use simplified language to be accessible to people with intellectual disability, and be screen-reader capable to be accessible to people with vision impairment.

I ran into something I didn't know how to do almost constantly.

Every step of this project was learning a new skill. I'm proud of myself for sticking with it and learning as I go even when it felt like an impossible task!

I learned:

some basic Figma skills, including prototyping and using plugins for forms. I also learned how to create a pitch video, and some basic video editing skills.

Right now:

the scope is limited to the test case of autism and a few barriers/accommodations options but this would be expanded to include every type of disability. I would love to include a social/interactive option for people to connect with others who have similar workplace barriers to discuss various accommodations and how they have worked for them. I would also have a section called "workplace hacks" where you can filter by barrier or disability type to learn about how people have successfully hacked their own accommodations when HR has been ill-equipped or uncooperative (sadly a common reality). There could also be opportunity to partner with the Job Accommodation Network (askjan.org) for an educational piece.
