What Inspired Access Renal?

We were inspired by the urgent need to address both the kidney shortage crisis and the gender disparities in organ transplantation. Women are disproportionately left at the bottom of kidney waitlists, facing longer wait times and lower transplant rates. We saw an opportunity to innovate for equity and impact lives.

What Does Access Renal Do?

Access Renal develops and provides bioartificial kidneys that replicate the essential functions of natural kidneys. Designed for mass production, these devices aim to offer a life-saving, accessible solution to kidney failure for hospitals and patients worldwide.

We are proud of Access Renal

We’re incredibly proud of our prototype, not just for its design, but for what it represents. It’s the result of countless hours of collaboration, research, and innovation, all driven by addressing a critical issue: gender inequality in access to kidney transplants. Our work not only highlights a long-overlooked disparity in the healthcare system but also offers a practical, life-saving solution that we hope will make a real difference for women and underserved patients waiting for kidney transplants.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we uncovered a deeply overlooked issue—gender inequality in the organ transplant recipient list. Along the way, we experienced the power of collaboration, from intense brainstorming sessions to countless rounds of trial and error in designing our solution. The teamwork, dedication, and effort poured into this project have been both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

What is the future of Access Renal?

We plan to further refine our prototype to ensure it meets the highest standards of safety and performance. Moving forward, we aim to partner with healthcare institutions and extend to more communities in need. Our long-term goal is to make bioartificial kidneys a practical, affordable solution—especially for underserved populations who are often overlooked by the current transplant system. Through innovation and collaboration, we hope to bring greater equity and access to kidney care worldwide.
