Inspiration
Hackathon Theme is Accessibility and disabled people sometimes have trouble going to a place and finding out that they can't enter due to accessibility restrictions. Our app solves this issue by allowing a user to view accessibility features of a place before they arrive.
What it does
Data is read in from Google Places API and is formatted from a JSON to a CSV which is then supposed to be displayed on the website as a table. Website also includes an interactive map with all the nearby places. New places can be added to the map using custom map markers within the index.html file using javascript functions. Function takes in location coordinates, marker image, and window content about the place.
How we built it
Christian - Backend dev, focused on using and manipulating the API in order to read in place data as a JSON file, which is then formatted and written into a CSV in Python.
Daisy - Frontend dev, focused on mainly building the website and formatting everything to look nice. Bootstrap theme called Agency, CSS, HTML, Javascript. Formatted website and added features using javascript.
Karina - Frontend dev, focused on mainly building the website, as well as making the visual design for all images and buttons for the website. Focused on adding accessible features to the website, such as alt text for images.
Challenges we ran into
Backend:
- Data cleaning with JSON file
- Figuring out Google Places API
- Iterating through specific items within JSON file
Frontend:
- Porting backend to frontend
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Backend:
- Successfully using API to read in place data
- Creating a class within the function that reads and filters data in one go
Frontend:
- Embedded Map
- Custom Map Markers
- Alt text screen reader accessibility
- Original logo, button images, and navigation bar
What we learned
- Usage of APIs
- Usage of JSON files
- Usage of GitHub
- Usage of different Python libraries such as geopy and json
- Javascript, HTML, CSS
- Bootstrap
What's next for Accessible Place Finder
- Being able to port backend to frontend
- Interactive map with backend
- Accessibility rating
- Find an API that gives data on accessibility by place to be more accurate with how accessible each place is
