Inspiration
As a person with disability, Accessibility is very important to me. Devpost website in its current form is usable for me but I know several folks from the disability community who would appreciate if there are more accessibility related features in the website.
What it does
Contrast mode can help those of us who have reduced vision by improving the contrast ratio between text or graphics against the background.
Highlighting the links makes it easier for those with reduced motor functions to identify and click links. Underlining the links all the time can help those with color blindness to find links irrespective of the colors.
Making the text larger can help people who have to zoom in for reading texts like those suffering from Glaucoma.
Those with low vision and dyslexia might appreciate the increased text spacing.
Pausing animations can help those with attention-related disabilities or vestibular disorders as auto-playing content could be distracting.
Dyslexia friendly mode uses fonts and styles to improve readability of the website for users with dyslexia.
Large cursor helps with easy selection.
Reading mask helps eliminate page distractions.
Reading guide helps those with focus issues to read large paragraphs.
Tooltip shows alternative text and aria labels for on-screen elements with a simple mouse hover.
Increasing line height ensures more comfortable spacing for more fluid interaction with on-screen texts.
Align site texts left, right or center to ensure a personalized and more accessible reading experience.
How I built it
I'm using user script extension to insert UserWay widget script to Devpost website for these accessibility features.
Challenges I ran into
Finding the right accessibility tool which can showcase the accessibility improvements to Devpost's website without me having internal access to the website was a challenge. I solved this problem by using UserWay widget via user script manager extension on Firefox browser.
Accomplishments I'm proud of
I'm proud of showcasing an actionable methodology to improve Devpost website's accessibility for users with disability and other needs.
What I learned
I learnt about web accessibility and ways to make website more accessible to users with different needs.
What's next for Accessible Devpost
By just using accessibility improvement tools like UserWay we can improve Devpost's inclusivity, Especially considering there are accessibility related hackathons in the platform now which people with disability like me would love to participate.
I'd like to discuss with Devpost team on further improving the inclusivity of the entire platform and the events.
