Edit: we won third place in the diversity and inclusion prize track!!
Inspiration
We wanted to try our hand at coding games since we had never tried that before, but since there are many games already online we decided to look into making games for people with sensory disabilities.
What it does
It's a website with 3 games designed to cater to people who are colorblind or blind and an anxiety/zen station. Play them here!!
How we built it
We used replit to collaborate and split up the work, at the end we put everything together and adjusted the formatting. We had 3 main categories people were in charge of(but everyone did everything regardless): design, research/images, code.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many challenges including the fact that we are all beginners in HTML/CSS and had virtually no experience in javascript, so most of the time we were learning rather than coding. We've also never used bootstrap before and spent hours trying to figure out how to use it to format our website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Our puzzle page is our favorite page, it took the longest because of bootstrap but in the end, it looks and works amazing.
- The design of our website looks polished and sticks to the arcade theme.
Overall, we're really proud that we put together a working website in a day because we are very new to web development.
What we learned
Working together as a team, especially when we're close friends is the key to these hackathons; it's so much more efficient. We had some disagreements as a team that set us back a couple of hours, but eventually, a compromise was made and a new plan for roles put into action.
What's next for Accessible Arcade
We didn't have enough time to make it fully accessible to people who are blind and it is also mainly in js which we were not familiar with. Our first steps would be to make it fully accessible, then to add more games or improve the games we already have!
Thank you!! We hope you have a great day!
