Inspiration

We noticed that digital information is not equally easy for everyone to understand. Complex language, language barriers, reading difficulties, and limited accessibility options can make everyday digital content difficult to access. This inspired us to build AccessAble AI — an AI-powered accessibility assistant designed to make information simpler, clearer, and more accessible.

What we built

AccessAble AI helps users understand digital content through multiple accessibility-focused features. Users can simplify complex text, translate information into different languages, explain difficult concepts in simple language, and listen to content using Read Aloud.

The application also provides accessibility settings such as adjustable font sizes, different font styles, high-contrast mode, dark mode, and reduced motion.

How we built it

We built the application as a web-based AI solution using Google AI Studio and Gemini AI. AI is used for text simplification, translation, and simple explanations, while browser-based speech synthesis supports the Read Aloud experience.

We focused on creating a simple and beginner-friendly interface so users can access the right feature without needing technical knowledge.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how AI can be used beyond chatbots to solve accessibility and information barriers. We also learned about designing user-focused interfaces, integrating AI features into a web application, and making digital experiences more accessible.

Challenges we faced

One of the main challenges was making different accessibility features work together while keeping the interface simple. We also faced challenges with multilingual translation and browser-based text-to-speech behavior across different languages.

Impact

Our goal is to reduce information barriers and help students, multilingual users, and people who prefer simplified or audio-based information access digital content more independently.
