Inspiration
Growing up in Rwanda, I experienced firsthand the struggle of learning in a language that wasn't my own. Like many children in Eastern Africa, English was the language of instruction, but it often felt like a barrier rather than a bridge to knowledge. I completed primary school without fully mastering English, and the resulting lack of confidence held me back from accessing different opportunities. It wasn't until I joined a book club in secondary school, where we read and wrote stories in Kinyarwanda, that I finally found my voice. This experience gave me the confidence to participate in “Andika Rwanda” competition where I was able to express myself through children’s stories and won prizes. Later on, I started reading English books too and my academic performance was highly boosted. This experience opened my eyes to the power of learning in one's mother tongue.
Today, millions of children across Africa face similar challenges, learning in languages they barely understand. Studies show that children taught in their mother tongue are more likely to succeed academically, yet many are denied this opportunity. This disconnect leads to poor academic performance, high dropout rates, and a loss of cultural heritage.
What it does
Our envisioned project will be a digital platform featuring e-books written by children and for children in their mother languages. The platform aims to bridge cultural gaps, enhance students' ability to express themselves, and provide adults with insights into children's perspectives. The goal is to empower future leaders through culturally relevant literature and improve literacy rates.
How we built it
- Content Creation: Children will be the writers of the e-books, crafting stories in their native languages. We will provide guidance and resources to support them in this process.
- Training and Development: We plan to offer workshops and support for children to help them develop their writing skills and create impactful content while expressing themselves.
- Digital Platform: We intend to build a user-friendly digital platform to host and distribute these e-books, including resources for learners and educators.
Challenges we ran into
- Cultural Sensitivity: Ensuring the content produced by children is culturally appropriate and resonates with diverse communities.
- Resource Constraints: Securing resources to support children in writing and illustrating their books.
- Access Issues: Addressing potential digital barriers to ensure the platform reaches all intended users effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- High-Quality Content: Producing engaging e-books created by children in various local languages.
- Enhanced Literacy: Improving reading skills and self-expression among children in underserved communities.
- Community Impact: Fostering understanding of children's perspectives through their own culturally relevant literature.
What we learned
- Effectiveness of Native Language Literature: Understanding how literature written by children in their native languages impacts confidence and language acquisition.
- Community Engagement: Learning how to effectively support and guide children in content creation.
- Digital Accessibility: Identifying strategies to overcome digital barriers and ensure widespread access to the platform.
What's next for Empowering Literacy Grow Literacy: Stories in Every Language
- Refining the Concept: Finalizing the project design and features based on further research and feedback.
- Building Partnerships: Establishing collaborations with educational institutions and organizations to support the project.
- Pilot Testing: Conducting pilot tests with a select group of children to gather data and refine the platform.
- Scaling Up: Planning for broader implementation and expanding the platform to include additional languages and resources.
