Inspiration
when i created my first company, my phone number got automatically listed on a public business directory. almost overnight, i started getting a flood of calls - mostly sales pitches for accounting, marketing, and other services i didn’t ask for. it was distracting and pulled me away from actually running the business. that moment stuck with me and became the seed for acall: an ai receptionist that could answer and filter calls, so founders like me could focus on what matters.
What it does
acall is an ai phone receptionist. it answers, screens, and manages calls with natural conversation. it’s always available, always consistent, and designed to keep you connected without breaking your focus.
How I built it
i drew on 5 years of mobile development experience and university knowledge to tackle the challenges of building an end-to-end system. i experimented with different ai providers, tested combinations of language and voice models, and set up the infrastructure to make them work together seamlessly. i also integrated cursor for efficient coding and experimentation, which helped speed up development and iteration. the goal wasn’t to reinvent the wheel, but to orchestrate the best tools into one reliable, smooth experience.
Challenges I ran into
getting the ai to sound natural without drifting into robotic territory was tough. balancing latency, voice quality, and call routing pushed my mobile and backend knowledge to the limit. integrating reliably with phone systems while keeping setup and onboarding simple for users was another major challenge.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
i built acall entirely on my own, but the product’s level of detail makes it feel like it was created by a full team. i carefully crafted every element, from voice flow to interface, so the experience feels seamless, polished, and professional - not like the work of a single developer.
What I learned
voice is unforgiving. every pause, delay, and nuance shapes trust. i learned that building an ai receptionist is not just about accuracy - it’s about reliability, tone, and flow. combining mobile development experience with ai experimentation is powerful.
What's next for acall: AI Phone Assistant
i’m working on adding outbound calling and smarter caller recognition, so acall can identify if a number is already in your contacts. i’m also iterating on feedback from users to improve details like onboarding, call handling, and overall experience. the goal is to keep refining acall into a seamless, reliable assistant that anticipates your needs and adapts to how people actually use it.
