Inspiration

As a student, it can be difficult to keep track of multiple assignments, deadlines, and priorities at the same time. We wanted to create something that would make schoolwork feel more manageable instead of overwhelming. That inspired us to build Academa, a productivity app that turns upcoming deadlines into smaller study sessions.

What We Learned

While building Academa, we learned how to build a functional React application from the ground up. We worked with JavaScript, React state, CSS, browser localStorage, and GitHub. We also learned how individual features such as assignment tracking, completion status, and automatic study-session generation can work together to create a complete user experience.

How We Built It

Academa was built using React, JavaScript, CSS, Vite, and localStorage.

Users can add an assignment with a due date and priority level. Academa then generates three study sessions leading up to the deadline. Assignments can be marked as completed or deleted, and the data is saved in the browser so assignments remain after refreshing the page.

We also created a README and GitHub repository to document the project and make the code accessible.

Challenges

One of our biggest challenges was making all of the features work together without breaking existing functionality. We had to troubleshoot issues with React state, brackets and JavaScript syntax, styling, and saving data with localStorage.

Another challenge was designing the study-session generator so that it could automatically create sessions on different days leading up to an assignment deadline.

Working through these challenges taught us how important testing and incremental development are. Instead of trying to build everything at once, we built and tested each feature individually before moving on.

What's Next

In the future, we would like to expand Academa with user accounts, cloud-based data storage, more customizable study plans, and smarter scheduling based on a student's workload and available study time.
