Inspiration
Our primary inspiration came from the captivating unknown of the deep ocean, combined with the solitary survival elements of games like Subnautica and the narrative depth of sci-fi horror. We wanted to blend the wonder of exploration with the tension of scarcity and danger.
What it does
Abyssal Echoes offers an immersive single-player experience where players pilot a high-tech submersible through a mysterious, perilous deep-sea trench. It challenges them to manage vital resources, upgrade their vessel, solve environmental puzzles, and unravel a compelling narrative while surviving aggressive alien fauna and extreme pressures.
How we built it
Utilizing a No-Code approach, we developed the core concept through detailed Game Design Documents, UI/UX mockups, flowchart-based logic diagrams, and extensive visual storyboarding. Tools like Figma for UI, Miro for flowcharts, and mood boards for art direction allowed us to define mechanics and aesthetics without writing a single line of code.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was effectively conveying the game's atmospheric tension and complex survival mechanics purely through conceptual designs, without playable prototypes. Ensuring that the No-Code approach clearly articulated intended player experience and technical requirements for future development required meticulous documentation and detailed visual assets.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are particularly proud of developing a comprehensive and engaging game concept with a strong narrative hook and clear gameplay loop, all within a No-Code framework. The detailed visual mockups for the HUD, upgrade screens, and environmental art successfully convey the intended mood and functionality, making the game's vision tangible.
What we learned
We learned the immense power of detailed conceptualization and visual communication in game design, especially with a No-Code methodology. It underscored that a strong foundation in design principles and clear communication can build a robust game vision even before development begins, streamlining the entire production process.
What's next for Abyssal Echoes: The Sunken World
Next, we aim to translate this detailed GDD into a working prototype using a low-code game engine. We plan to develop initial playable segments focusing on core survival mechanics and environmental exploration, followed by iterative playtesting to refine the user experience and expand on the narrative elements.
