Inspiration

As an international student in the United States, I have personally faced how overwhelming student life can become when everything important is scattered across emails, documents, university websites, deadlines, and confusing rules. Studying abroad is not just about classes. It is also about taxes, health insurance, CPT and OPT, internships, leases, scams, finances, documents, and knowing who to ask before making a high-stakes decision.

I built AbroadOS because I wanted to solve a problem I understand deeply: international students often do not need more information. They need a clear system that turns confusing information into next steps.

What it does

AbroadOS is the operating system for international student life.

It helps international students manage taxes, health insurance, work authorization, housing, academics, jobs, documents, scams, finances, and deadlines in one personalized dashboard.

The app turns a student profile, documents, and life situation into:

  • Risk alerts
  • Personalized checklists
  • Deadline tracking
  • Document organization
  • Work authorization review
  • Tax readiness support
  • Insurance explanations
  • Scam detection
  • Housing lease summaries
  • Career and academic planning
  • Advisor-ready reports

AbroadOS is not just a chatbot. It is a structured life-admin platform that helps students understand what they need to do, what documents they are missing, what mistakes to avoid, and what questions to ask their DSO, university office, tax support, insurance provider, landlord, or advisor.

How we built it

I built AbroadOS as a full-stack web application using Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion, Lucide React, Supabase-ready architecture, Gemini AI integration, and Vercel deployment.

The frontend is designed as a premium SaaS dashboard with a landing page, sign-in flow, sidebar navigation, dashboard command center, and dedicated modules for each major area of international student life.

The app includes modules such as:

  • TaxPath for tax readiness
  • CareGuide for health insurance and healthcare navigation
  • WorkSafe for CPT, OPT, internships, and work authorization
  • Document Vault for student documents
  • ScamShield for fraud and scam detection
  • Career Hub for jobs, resumes, and applications
  • Academic Planner for courses and GPA
  • Finance Planner for budgeting
  • Housing Assistant for leases and rent
  • Deadline Center for important dates
  • Advisor Summary for professional reports

I also built responsible AI guardrails into the experience. AbroadOS does not claim to replace lawyers, tax professionals, doctors, insurance providers, financial advisors, or university officials. Instead, it helps students prepare for official conversations with better questions, organized documents, and clearer next steps.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was designing AbroadOS as more than a generic AI chatbot. A chatbot can answer questions, but international students need workflows. They need dashboards, checklists, deadlines, risk levels, document summaries, and advisor-ready outputs.

Another challenge was handling high-risk topics responsibly. Areas like immigration, CPT/OPT, taxes, medical bills, scams, housing, and financial survival require careful wording. The app needed to be helpful without pretending to provide final legal, tax, immigration, medical, or financial advice.

I also worked on making the app feel like a real startup product instead of a simple hackathon prototype. That meant polishing the UI, improving navigation, making the sign-in flow simple, connecting GitHub and Vercel, and ensuring the app was deployed and working publicly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that AbroadOS feels like a real product with a clear mission and a complete user experience.

The app includes a polished landing page, working dashboard, AI Advisor, document analysis, scam detection, work authorization review, tax readiness workflows, finance planning, academic planning, housing support, deadline tracking, and advisor-ready summaries.

I am especially proud of the Advisor Summary feature because it shows the real purpose of AbroadOS: helping students walk into important conversations prepared, organized, and confident.

I am also proud that the project is deployed, connected to GitHub, and built with a scalable architecture so it can grow from a hackathon project into a real platform for international students.

What we learned

Building AbroadOS taught me that the best AI products are not just about generating answers. They are about creating structure, reducing stress, and helping people make better decisions.

I learned how important responsible AI design is, especially when building for students dealing with immigration, taxes, healthcare, housing, and finances. The product has to be useful, but also honest about its limits.

I also learned that a strong product needs both technical implementation and emotional clarity. AbroadOS matters because the problem is real. International students are ambitious, hardworking, and often far from home. They deserve better tools for navigating systems that are confusing, expensive, and sometimes risky.

What's next for AbroadOS

Next, I want to turn AbroadOS into a real MVP for international students.

The roadmap includes:

  • Real document upload and secure storage
  • Better AI document extraction
  • University-specific workflows
  • Personalized CPT, OPT, tax, insurance, and housing timelines
  • Email and document parsing
  • Calendar integrations
  • More detailed scam detection
  • Mobile-first improvements
  • Advisor and university office collaboration features
  • Student community and support resources

The long-term vision is for AbroadOS to become the trusted life-admin platform for international students around the world: a place where students can organize their documents, understand their risks, prepare for official conversations, and avoid costly mistakes while studying abroad.
