Inspiration
Most international students struggle with adapting to a new environment. They have various anxieties: schoolwork, health, budget, adapting to a new culture, and making new friends, just to name a few. These are also strongly connected with each other. Many international students try to relieve such anxieties by asking their friends from the same countries or parents. However, we think it is not enough because most of them do not know much about universities abroad. As one of the solutions for greater adjustment to a new environment, it is said that more interaction with local students is needed.
What it does
Abroad.college relieves the anxieties of international students by providing communities where they can interact with other international students. There are separate communities available for the international students of each university as well as for each country. Students can post advice for others and ask questions. In this way, Abroad.college lets international students make the most out of their experience.
How we built it
We built this website using the Django web framework + Postgres in the back end and the Bootstrap CSS framework in the front end.
Challenges we ran into
・Little practical programming and design experience ・ Planning the database models in a logical, easy to work with manner ・Learning Django on the fly
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite our inexperience, our team made a functional web app within the time of the hackathon.
What we learned
・Django class-based views ・Object relational mapping
What's next for abroad
In the future, we could implement a private messaging and friend system.
