Inspiration
We were inspired by Florida's close relation to the space industry and its proximity to Miami. The majority of our members are close to space stations.
What it does
Our website is a landing page for space novices and enthusiasts alike to find upcoming events, NASA reports, view constellations, and learn about space.
How we built it
We utilized HTML, CSS, vanilla javascript, jquery. We utilized javascript to build a paralax scrolling effect and we implemented a large high quality video banner for our homepage. We utilized open APIs from NASA, MIT, and others to provide live data as well as a free to use github repository for the constellations app. We also used bootstrap for some portions of the site.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of challenges. Particularly with implementing javascript code in the constellations app to make it automatically generate a Miami sky with constellation labels per user input. We also had some difficulties with github management.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We accomplished a lot during the past 48 hours, designed and built an entire website, included a lot of fancy effects and functionalities.
What we learned
We learned a lot about APIs, bootstrap, git and github. We learned to always include git ignore (haha). We got a lot of practice with CSS positioning.
What's next for Above the Horizon
We would love to further improve on this project's functionality and appearance. We would like to add text effects with jquery. We also would like to add more API functionality. We might change the rocket launch API to Florida only launches.
