When thinking about a big problem to solve we realized that all our experience in the engineering program were similar. As transfer students we had a hard time acclimating to the engineering program at UMBC due to the far that we did not have many resources or mentors to help guide us.

What it does

We decided that we would create a platform that provides assistance to Black Engineers while in undergraduate and graduate school. This web application will allow them to be matched with 1 or more mentors based their interests, career goals, and coursework. They will also be able to collaborate with other students on personal project workshops, and more.

How we built it

We used react javascript to create the web application. We coded in react javascript, html, and css. We will used python for the algorithm. We also used Figma to design the web application.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into design issues because we started everything from scratch. We had never used react javascript before so that was definitely challenge for us. We were also using Figma for the first time so it slowed our progress.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have a mockup of what our web applications should look like. We also were able to create a plan for the design and the purpose which was great.

What we learned

We learned that we need more coding practice but also that creating something from our shared experiences really can make a difference in other peoples lives.

What's next for ABE: Assisting Black Engineers

The next thing for ABE is to actually finish the implementation and deploy it. We would love for it to be national.
