Inspiration
We noticed that children often struggle with arithmetic because traditional abacus learning is repetitive and not engaging. While effective, these methods fail to motivate learners consistently. We wanted to combine education and gamification to make learning mental math fun, interactive, and rewarding.
What it does
Abacus Quest is a digital gamified platform that:
Teaches abacus and mental arithmetic through interactive lessons.
Uses gamification elements like points, badges, and levels to encourage practice.
Adapts the difficulty of exercises based on user performance.
Provides progress tracking for parents and teachers.
Offers mini-games and competitions to make learning fun and social.
How we built it
Lesson Design: Structured learning paths for Beginner → Intermediate → Advanced levels.
Digital Abacus Simulation: Realistic interactive abacus for practice.
Gamification Layer: Points, badges, leaderboards, and mini-games.
Adaptive Learning Algorithm: Difficulty adjusts using metrics like correct streaks:
𝑏(next)=𝑏(current)+𝛼⋅(correct_streak)
where 𝑏(next) is the number of beads in the next exercise and 𝛼 is a scaling factor based on performance.
Dashboard: Analytics for parents and teachers to monitor progress.
Developed wireframes, mockups, and planned cross-platform compatibility (mobile, tablet, desktop).
Challenges we ran into
Designing adaptive difficulty that is challenging but not frustrating.
Balancing educational rigor with gamification to keep lessons both fun and effective.
Creating a child-friendly UI that is intuitive yet visually appealing.
Planning for scalability, including multi-language support and integration with school curricula.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Developed a comprehensive digital learning framework combining abacus practice and gamification.
Created a realistic digital abacus simulation for effective skill development.
Designed an engaging reward system that motivates consistent practice.
Conceptualized a platform scalable to schools and global audiences.
