Inspiration

We were inspired by the timeless hand cricket game that we used to play in classrooms all the way up to 12th grade. Those moments of quick fun, creative rules, and school-time banter created lasting memories. "Do you remember hand cricket?" — this nostalgic question sparked the idea to build an online version of that beloved game, so anyone can relive those moments anytime, anywhere.

What it does

Aatarenu simulates the classic hand cricket game in a browser. Two players take turns batting and bowling by selecting numbers from 1 to 6. If the numbers match, the player is out — just like in the traditional game. It includes:

  • Turn-based gameplay
  • Score tracking
  • Player-vs-computer mode
  • Smooth UI for intuitive play

How we built it

  • Framework & Language: Built using Bolt.new and TypeScript
  • State Management: Used simple state hooks and conditional rendering to track scores, turns, and game progress
  • User Interface: Designed a minimal, nostalgic interface resembling the chalkboard vibe of school days
  • Gameplay Logic: Turn-based number selection system with rules hardcoded to mimic traditional hand cricket

Challenges we ran into

  • Translating informal schoolyard rules into clean game logic
  • Managing game state transitions and player interactions
  • Ensuring fairness and randomness for computer-generated moves
  • Creating a fun experience without overcomplicating the UI

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully brought a childhood game to life on the web
  • Made the game accessible, simple, and fun for players of all ages
  • Built a working prototype in a short time using Bolt.new
  • Created a clean UI with nostalgic elements

What we learned

  • Using Bolt.new for rapid prototyping and collaboration
  • Handling state and interactions in TypeScript
  • Structuring simple game logic for web-based interaction
  • Importance of keeping user experience intuitive and lightweight

What's next for Aatarenu - Online Hand Cricket Game

  • Add multiplayer support for real-time friend matches
  • Include sound effects and animations to boost engagement
  • Add leaderboard and score history
  • Mobile-first optimization
  • Shareable game links for quick challenges

Aatarenu is more than just a game — it’s a portal to your school days. Let’s play!
