What's AardPark?
In a single sentence: parking sucks! As the world we live in grows larger every day, the harder it gets to find parking, especially near the places you need to be. Our solution? AardPark!
What it does
AardPark is a web application that allows users to interact with folks willing to rent their parking spots. Users can search for spots by location, price, and range, and can also reserve spots in advance. Lot owners can list their parking spots on the platform and set their own prices. We envision everything from unused driveways to car parks being on our webapp.
How we built it
We used FastAPI and MongoDB Atlas as our backend. For the frontend, we utilized TypeScript and Angular.JS. For authorization, we used Auth0. We also leveraged the Google Maps and Geocoding APIs to provide users with real-time visual information on parking spots.
Why it's useful
Most major metropolitan centers face absurd parking shortages on a daily basis. Even midsized cities tend to feel this scarcity during peak hours. We're confident that AardPark can alleviate these issues and more. Freeing up otherwise unused spaces for parking can potentially decrease traffic congestion and reduce emissions across the board. Everyone from businesses to landlords and homeowners can lease out an unused space to commuters to do their community a service and earn some money on the side. In short, AardPark is a win-win for frustrated drivers and folks with room to spare!
Challenges we ran into
- Auth0 integration was rather difficult despite the useful documentation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We were able to get the third-party integrations up and running rather nicely.
- We're proud to have come up with an idea for what we believe is a pressing issue facing the world today.
What we learned
- Planning our project beforehand gave us the vision and direction we needed to finish this project!
- Integrating the front and backend was more difficult than we initially assumed.
What's next for AardPark
- We'd like to implement a chat feature that allows renters to communicate with providers regarding specific details like exact locations and timings
- The data gathered from this project could help us understand parking patterns across the United States, and maybe even the world. It could also go towards improving parking infrastructure in major cities.
