During this hackathon we worked together on a website that can help elementary school students with math, science, grammar, history, geography. The name of our project is A Torture Device To Use On Bad Kids™. Before Friday, I (Kaitlynn) had never used Javascript. Now, I’ve been introduced to the basic Javascript terminology that we used to create our website. And I (Anya) realized how hard it is for professionals to transform their ideas into something accessible over the internet. Coding languages are just as hard to learn as normal languages. Over the course of this hackathon, we ran into a couple problems. Fortunately, we received help from Rolando, the coding teacher at our school. Rolando helped us transform our bland program into something more appealing to look at. From the beginning, we knew we wanted to do something educational that targets elementary schoolers. From our own experiences, we know that the students in those grade levels are typically a bit more hectic than middle and high school students. A lot of elementary school kids are too young to properly behave in class, but old enough to retain information. We decided that a website that could administer tests in an interactive way, might be able to help students, teachers, and parents alike. Since kids are intrigued by technology, they might find this form of test taking more interesting. We know from experience how annoying tests are in elementary school, we find this form of test taking more easy, practical, and interesting.
