🎬 A Short Way Away 💡 Inspiration
A Short Way Away was inspired by my study abroad experience — a time of independence, self-discovery, and quiet exploration. I wanted to recreate those same emotions cinematically, this time closer to home.
San Francisco felt like the perfect destination — a trip not too far, yet rich in culture, diversity, and life. Often, we overlook the beauty that’s right next to us because we crave somewhere distant. This short film reminds me — and hopefully others — that sometimes the best adventures aren’t far away at all.
Through this project, I wanted to evoke a sense of nostalgia, calm, and connection — to show that being alone doesn’t mean being lonely. It’s a story about treating yourself to presence, peace, and curiosity.
🧭 How I Built It
I created A Short Way Away using CapCut, ChatGPT, and my own filmed footage from a solo day trip to San Francisco. The music was generated using CapCut’s AI audio tool, allowing me to shape the emotional tone around the visuals.
Before filming, I planned the story and emotional rhythm — focusing on what I wanted the audience to feel: freedom, reflection, and stillness. I storyboarded my shots, scouted locations, and designed the sequence to flow like a cinematic travel diary.
Shooting wasn’t always easy — camera angles, framing, and capturing moments while traveling solo had their challenges. But I kept adapting, editing as I learned, using what I had to tell the story I envisioned.
🎥 What I Learned
I’ve always admired the way creators and influencers make their edits feel mesmerizing — that blend of music, story, and emotion. While working on this project (especially under a tight timeline), I couldn’t include every creative idea I wanted, but I learned so much about AI’s creative potential and my own ability to experiment.
This film became more than a project — it became a video diary. In the process, I reconnected with my emotions, reflected on my time abroad, and rediscovered my love for creating visuals that feel alive.
⚙️ Challenges
The biggest challenge was bringing everything together in such a short time. With limited experience in CapCut and AI tools, I was learning, experimenting, and creating all at once — often feeling overwhelmed.
Originally, I had planned an AI-animated short, but regenerating clips and, unfortunately, running out of credits forced me to pivot quickly. Choosing to work with real footage instead became a blessing in disguise — it allowed me to express authenticity and emotion through simplicity.
There was something more that I planned to do with the film, but due to a lack of knowledge and the time crunch I was in, I had to skip it, unfortunately.
Despite the time pressure, I’m proud I didn’t give up. I made something honest and personal, even if imperfect.
🌤️ Reflection
A Short Way Away marks a creative milestone for me. It gave me the space to finally create a film I’ve long envisioned — a cinematic story about reflection, solitude, and joy in the familiar.
I hope viewers find comfort in it — to enjoy their own company, to explore the unknown, and to rediscover beauty in the places and feelings closest to home.
If I had more time, I would have added animated characters and transitions — playful touches that could symbolize my interaction with the world and my audience. But even as it stands, A Short Way Away is a reminder that small stories can hold big emotions, and creativity doesn’t always require going far — just far enough to see yourself again.
