Inspiration
As a lifelong pet owner in the suburbs, I noticed how hard it was to find compatible playmates for my golden retriever—no easy way to connect with nearby owners who shared my pup’s energy level or schedule. I wanted to build something that made pet socialization simple, not stressful, for folks like me who prioritize their pets’ happiness.
What it does
PetPlaydate is a one-stop platform for pet owners to find ideal playmates for their pets (matching by breed, size, temperament), coordinate group walks at local parks, swap short-term pet care with trusted neighbors, assess pet behavior for safer interactions, and join fun local pet events like meetups or adoption drives. It also offers a premium tier with advanced features for enhanced usability.
How we built it
I started with wireframing core modules (Matching, Walk Planner, Care Exchange) in Figma, aligning with intuitive U.S. app navigation habits. I coded the frontend in React/HTML/CSS for a minimalist, pet-friendly UI, and used Node.js/Express for backend logic. Firebase handled data structuring, and Vercel deployed the platform for seamless access.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was refining the pet matching logic to balance breed compatibility, energy levels, and temperament—ensuring suggestions felt personalized and practical. I also struggled with designing the trust badge system for care exchanges to feel authentic and trustworthy without overcomplicating the UI.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Crafting a cohesive, easy-to-navigate platform that puts pet owners’ needs first—every feature (from the behavior quiz to event calendars) ties back to making pet socialization stress-free. The minimalist, colorful UI (soft blues, warm yellows) also feels approachable, matching the joy of pet ownership.
What we learned
I deepened my understanding of user-centric design—small details (like rounded corners, paw-print icons) make the platform feel welcoming. I also learned how to balance free/premium tiers to keep core features accessible while adding value for paid users, and how to align functionality with real-world pet owner habits.
What's next for this project
I plan to expand the event module to include more niche pet activities (training workshops, breed-specific meetups), refine the care exchange trust system with more nuanced verification, and explore mobile optimization to make the platform accessible on-the-go for busy pet owners.
