Inspiration

Our inspiration was Pokémon Go, since that was a big, influential game back in 2016. Our goal was to find an idea that alleviated stress for students but also had those nostalgic 2016 vibes. Additionally, a lot of students want to explore campus as they get acclimated, and Pokémon Go featured a similar exploration feature.

What it does

Our app encourages students to learn about Georgia Tech's campus as a stress reliever. Our sidequests span all over campus, going from Tech Tower all the way to the CRC. The app has a list of quests that students can find as they walk around the map. For each quest, the student can click on the map icon and find information about the quest. When the quest is accepted, the student has to upload proof of their completed quest. Once completed, the student can launch a Pokeball to catch a Georgia Tech-inspired Pokémon!

How we built it

We built this project using React with TypeScript. We coded the project in VS Code, using GitHub to connect our code. We first worked on implementing features on different pages such as the map, the pokedex, and the quest info pages. Then, we slowly connected all of our pages into the now main app.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges early on with our map feature because we couldn't connect directly to the Google Maps API. But we quickly pivoted to a more analog approach, and it still looked like Google Maps in the end with the scrollable map feature.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the Pokeball throwing feature. It is a staple of the original 2016 Pokémon Go game, and we implemented it late when we realized we still needed it. Additionally, we are really proud of how much we focused on making sure the artwork and app layout looked like Pokémon Go to match that feeling.

What we learned

One of the biggest things we learned was the specialization of work and how to implement a moving map. We split our work evenly, and this was one of our first times using GitHub to connect files. It was a struggle to figure it out, but we were able to learn to work in different parts and be able to rely on each other's skills in various jobs.

What's next for Side Quest GO

Our next steps would be to implement further backend admin features to upload new quests directly from the UI interface, as well as have a leaderboard across users.
