Inspiration

Usually breast cancer is detected at a late stage (3/4) and chances of survival becomes less. Even post-treatment survival is complicated. Early detection is the only key to give women a fighting chance. In developing countries like in the case of rural India, speaking about this topic is also a taboo among many women. Even if they talk to someone, it will be a close friend who herself may not know about this topic in much depth. In this case, women need someone to talk to, to ask questions or doubts and get clarity on how to proceed further to get proper healthcare and treatment. They may also need assistance in locating the nearest testing centre, doctors, healthcare specialists or NGOs that may help them with this medical condition.

What it does

This app connects women who have signs of cancer, have been diagnosed with it or have already went through treatment with relevant medical professionals, healthcare workers, volunteers. In addition to that, they may get the same assistance 24x7 in their local regional language through an NLP based chatbot/personal assistant. The app also provides geo-located testing centre details.

How I built it

I used Python, NLP and Google translator API to input user queries or questions, fetch the relevant answers and then provide the answers in English and a regional language of choice to users.

Challenges I ran into

I didn't get any assistance till the last moment from my team-mates except a customary phone call. I learnt NLP and created the bot from scratch in 2 days and somehow put together a presentation and video of the same. It is a very basic tech implementation and I could have done so much more had I been with a more focused and dedicated team.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I managed to complete a basic implementation of my idea and submit the idea on time by myself. I am proud that I was able to think of using a way of using technology for social good. Even though it was a very basic idea compared to my peers, I am sure but I am glad I participated and completed the challenge.

What I learned

Technologically I learnt NLP. Overall, I learnt that so much more could be done for humanity using technology like Data Analytics and AI than what is being done already.

What's next for A mobile based application to promote awareness among women

Create a dedicated personal assistant for women in their local language using advanced NLP and answer/support any query or question in any part of the world. Provide better assistance, connect with more relevant people.
