Inspiration
This project grew out of a quiet question:
What happens when we stop fighting our inner shadows and choose to lull them to sleep instead?
“Lullaby for a Monster” explores the idea that fear is not an enemy, but a forgotten instinct, a creature at the edge of awareness that longs not for destruction, but for rest. Instead of banishing darkness, the film offers tenderness to it. Instead of slaying the monster, it sings to it.
The poem written for the film guides this vision — turning claws, fangs, and night fears into symbols of vulnerability and misunderstood longing.
Even the things we are afraid to face deserve calm, silence, and dreams.
What it does
This work blends animated surrealism, AI-assisted imagery, and a whispered lullaby to create a meditative nocturnal journey.
It doesn't frighten.
It listens, breathes, and invites viewers to meet their inner monster the way one meets a child unable to fall asleep.
The film becomes a space between dream and consciousness, where shadows soften and fear dissolves into quietness.
How we built it
- AI image generation for visual concepts and assets
- Frame-by-frame animation and compositing
- Sound design and whispered vocal recording
- Poetic writing built specifically for vocal cadence and emotional rhythm
- Custom post-processing to preserve a tactile, “film-grain-from-memory” texture
Challenges we ran into
- Finding a balance between the uncanny and the gentle
- Avoiding horror tropes while keeping the mystery intact
- Maintaining emotional subtlety in AI-generated imagery
- Ensuring the monster feels alive — not frightening, not cute, but real in the way an inner feeling is real
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a lullaby that comforts instead of scares
