About the Project: A-Live — African Marketplace Reinvented
Inspiration
The idea for A-Live was born from a deep belief: Everyone, no matter where they live, should have a chance to show the world what they offer.
During the early ideation of an African marketplace platform, I imagined a simple scene: A woman in a remote African village going live to share her handcrafted goods or traditional services. The world doesn’t just need another e-commerce app — it needs one that connects authentic local creators with a global audience, in real time.
That vision became A-Live: a platform where live video meets commerce, powered by AI and built to serve the overlooked genius of rural and urban African entrepreneurs.
What I Learned
Building A-Live taught me more than just technical skills:
- The power of live storytelling in sales.
- How AI can bridge language, culture, and accessibility gaps.
- That many traditional sellers don’t need complexity—they need connection
- And most importantly: "simple technology, when done right, can be revolutionary."
How I want to build it
The development of A-Live focused on two main components:
Mobile and Web Applications
- Built using modern frameworks (like React Native & React.js).
- Designed for low bandwidth environments.
- Integrated streaming via scalable live video SDKs (e.g., Agora, Amazon IVS).
- AI-Powered Experience
- Product recognition and auto-tagging using computer vision.
- Smart recommendations based on user behavior.
- Real-time translation and captioning to break language barriers.
- AI chat assistant for product queries and seller support.
Challenges Faced
Connectivity Constraints Making live streaming viable in areas with limited internet access required optimizing video compression and offering fallback options like audio or photo uploads.
Tech Literacy Designing the platform for non-tech-savvy sellers was a constant reminder to simplify interfaces and workflows.
Trust and Payments Building a secure, mobile-friendly checkout and convincing rural sellers to trust a digital system required localized UX research and user onboarding flows.
AI Bias and Local Context Training AI models to understand African languages, products, and cultural nuances took extra effort and creative data sourcing.
- What’s Next*
The journey is just beginning. A-Live is not just about commerce—it's about equity, visibility, and empowerment.
Next steps:
- Partner with local cooperatives to onboard village sellers.
- Launch regional language support.
- Introduce AI-powered storytelling tools for sellers to tell their journey while they sell.
Thanks for reading. If you believe in unlocking the voice of every artisan, farmer, and maker—no matter where they are—A-Live is for you.
