Inspiration

We were inspired by the prompt "illuminate your passion." We are all very into video games and with Halloween just passing, we wanted to create an 8-bit 2D horror game with a concept reminiscent of Red Riding Hood.

What it does

Well, its intended purpose is that you run towards the light to save yourself from a big monster chasing you down in a forest.

How we built it

We built it using Itch.io, Unity, Git/GitHub, and Discord. We used Itch.io for assets, Git/Github to transport our code between our computers, Unity as the actual game engine, Discord to communicate and OBS Studio to record our video.

Challenges we ran into

Figuring out how to work on a Unity project together, remotely. Continually ran into debugging issues within the code as well as issues when pushing and merging our code across computers when we sent it to each other via GitHub. Attempted to get the background to work on a looping mechanism and eventually decided to manually place it all instead.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Well, none of us have ever used Unity, Git, Github, or assets. Or have made a game. So this entire process was an incredibly difficult learning curve. We are incredibly proud of learning how to create animations from given assets. We all have been wanting to create a game for a while and were daunted by the amount we didn't know, it was an incredible experience to be able to work on something that we've all wanted to do for so long together.

What we learned

Unity

  • learned how to slice asset tilesets into separate assets
  • turning asset tile sheets into animations
  • adding animation paths
  • getting the camera to follow the player
  • getting the player to move
  • getting objects to collide with each other

Other

  • how to use GitHub to work on a project cooperatively from remote locations
  • how to use Visual Studio Code to manually debug
  • C#

What's next for A Light in the Forest

We intended to add a castle as another exploratory level, as well as an interactive mechanic to pick up things off of the forest floor. We also wanted to add a defense/fight mechanism for the player. We unfortunately probably will not continue to further develop this as a game.
