Inspiration
We wanted to focus on a project that helped empower the women of Virginia Tech to expand their growth and capabilities, specifically incoming freshmen, who are new to the university lifestyle and the widespread opportunities. A multitude of VT resources are scattered throughout the internet providing information about these different organizations and opportunities, and it takes time to find these useful resources, jumping from one webpage to another just to get to them. So, we started thinking of several ideas on what to create, and we decided on a helpful website guide that includes a discussion forum for these new female students to grow and interact.
What it does
Our central hub-like website serves as a guide, allowing VT women to easily access these helpful tools. It provides links to several different resources ranging from career and professional development to female-centered organizations and campus involvement. All resources are conveniently accessible in one area, and we included a discussion board, where you could make your own profile, and interact with fellow students with the same interests as you.
How we built it
We mainly used html, css, and javascript to build off of a simple template we found online. We worked with the code in Visual Studio Code most of us are familiar with this technology and language.
Challenges we ran into
Since it was our entire team’s first Hackathon, choosing a project idea and deciding how we would implement it proved to be quite challenging. We navigated through several different topics and researched almost every type of deliverable until we landed on our final project. This whole process took a majority of our time the first day, which left us with not a lot of time to implement our idea. Because of the lack of time and high complexity of our design, the functionality of the account creation and discussion post don’t quite work as they should, but we will continue to improve upon that after the competition.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of our beautiful design of the website as we tried to make it simplistic and modern, but also include the Hokie theme, which we believe worked very well. It looks very easy to navigate around and use, so we are proud that we were able to achieve that. Plus, it was our first hackathon, and we believe that we created something pretty cool for the first time.
What we learned
We learned the importance of design and planning when working on a project. When we were able to make a rough design of what we wanted our website to look like, when we finally made it, we did not run into many problems. By planning ahead and scheduling when we wanted certain aspects completed, we were somewhat efficient and successful in this Hackathon.
What's next for A Lady's Guide to Virginia Tech
We hope to further develop the social media aspect of the website. We want people to be able to make accounts and connect with other female VT students through the website and potentially become good friends on campus. We also hope to add more career opportunities through partnerships with different companies as to expand female opportunities at VT.
