Inspiration
Following the theme "Journey", we thought a lot about other ways to represent Journeys, one of which is exploring issues and trying to fix them, as well as a journey through the mind. That led to the ideas of non-linearity and exploration of a small space.
The game was heavily inspired by elements of multiple different games, from the meta elements of the crashes coming from many sources. The non-euclidean / linear storytelling came from "The Exit 8" game and the side scroller vibes and art style was partially inspired by Mr Hopp's Playhouse. The "base" style of the game is inspired by the graphics of children video games and the story and style was inspired by Coraline, with the ideas of escapism and psychological horror.
Each member had multiple games and media that they were inspired by that it was hard to determine a set list.
What it does
The game follows a loop where the game corrupts overtime, and ends with the NPC being revealed as the evil of the game.
How we built it
The main part of the game was made in Unity, but all music and art assets were all custom made for the project. We split the project among 4 roles:
- Tom: Programmer and Developer
- Karim: Art
- Thomas: Music
- Ema: Script Writer + Narrative Developer
Challenges we ran into
The main challenges we faced was just figuring out what the game was going to be. Everyone had wants and figuring out a middle ground was tough but we succeeded in that. The other major issue was the 48hours time frame, which led to a lot more stress and sleepless nights.
What we wish we could do
Due to the time limit, a few things were cut:
- The NPC was going to rip their face apart by pulling on the hair to expose the monster
- The chase sequence was going to be more intense
- The outdoor sequence was going to be an actual game
- The player was going to try to "fix" the game between crashes which would lead to more errors and bugs in the game
- The ending was going to be different.
- There was going to be a secret ending
