Inspiration

SuperSubs was inspired by one of my advertising heroes, Cliff Freeman. I wanted to imagine how he might direct a sandwich commercial in today’s AI era, loud, absurd, and cinematic. After 25 years as a professional creative video editor in advertising, I wanted to fuse traditional storytelling craft with the raw power of generative AI to show how human instinct and machine imagination can elevate each other.

What it does

A 30-second AI-generated spec TV spot where submarine sandwiches battle mundane lunch choices in a cinematic showdown. It’s a humorous, high-energy proof of concept for how AI can deliver brand-level storytelling with personality and punch.

How I built it

Created using Veo 3 (Google DeepMind), Freepik, ElevenLabs, Splice, Krea.ai, Ideogram, and Hugging Face, with sound and music from Motion Array. Each frame was directed, refined, and edited with an advertising editor’s eye — using pacing, rhythm, and structure to transform AI-generated visuals into something broadcast-ready.

Challenges I ran into

Directing AI to be funny without becoming random was the hardest part. Maintaining a Cliff Freeman–style tone, funny because it’s true, required dozens of tests in framing, performance, and visual timing to balance realism and absurdity.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Blending Ideogram and Veo 3 created expressive, cinematic motion graphics far beyond what either tool was designed for. It proved that AI can move with editorial intent, not just generate pretty pictures.

What I learned

AI-generated visuals matched with professional creative editing skills is the key to the future of generative storytelling. When human intuition guides the machine, the result feels crafted, emotional, and alive — not synthetic.

Expanding SuperSubs into a full on campaign, exploring what classic 90s-style humor looks like through today’s AI tools. If Cliff were alive today, I’d like to think he’d laugh and say, “Now that’s a sandwich.”
