Inspiration

Our inspiration for "A Fruitful Eye" stemmed from the alarming food wastage issue in the fruit industry. Witnessing 18% of India's fruit and vegetable production being wasted annually, worth Rs 13,300 crore, we felt compelled to create a solution that would significantly reduce this wastage and have a positive impact on both the environment and the various stakeholders in the Fruit industry.

What it does

A Fruitful Eye is a cutting-edge system that combines sensors, computer vision, and machine learning to accurately assess the quality of fruits. It mimics human sensory abilities, identifying fruit types, segmenting fruit images, and integrating environmental parameters. It then employs these insights to classify fruits based on their quality, ripeness, and freshness, significantly reducing food wastage in the fruit industry.

How we built it

We built A Fruitful Eye by integrating several key components. We employed sensors to monitor gas levels, temperature, and humidity, while a camera captured images of the fruits. Advanced techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Genetic Algorithms (GA) were used to extract features from these images. The environmental parameters were incorporated as weight factors for these features. Finally, Support Vector Machine (SVM) were employed for classification.

Challenges we ran into

Data Integration: Harmonizing data from sensors, images, and environmental factors was a significant challenge. Algorithm Complexity: Implementing advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms required substantial effort and expertise. Hardware Integration: Combining sensors and cameras into a seamless device proved to be technically demanding.

Developing a holistic solution to address a critical issue in the fruit industry. Creating an integrated system that leverages sensors, computer vision, and machine learning for highly accurate fruit quality assessment. Achieving real-time monitoring and reducing food wastage in a sustainable way.

What's next for A Fruitful Eye

The future of A Fruitful Eye involves further refinement and scaling. We plan to enhance the user-friendliness of the device, expand its compatibility with different fruits and environments, and explore opportunities for automation in fruit handling. Additionally, we aim to gather more real-world data to continually improve the accuracy and efficiency of our fruit quality assessment system.
