Why we made this project

2.2 billion people worldwide suffer from eye conditions. However, over one billion of those cases could have been prevented or have not been treated. Unfortunately, this statistic is not shocking. In the United States alone, nearly one-third of the population did not receive necessary medical treatment due to financial restrictions. (all statistics are according to the World Health Organization).

What is the project

We wanted to leverage our skills in Artifical Intelligence and Machine Learning to provide a solution to this global issue. A.Eye was created by integrating Python 3 primarily with Kaggle, OpenCV, and Streamlit. It is currently able to diagnose Uveitis, Glaucoma, Strabismus, Cataracts, and Exophthalmos. This is the only available software that can diagnose multiple eye diseases, all from one picture.

What we're proud of

We are proud of the edition of the website that is currently running. Currently, we are the only available program to recognize five types of eye disease from a single image. It was a long and bumpy road, but we are glad that we’ve released something that can hopefully help the world.

What's next for A.Eye

We have a clear set of goals for further implementations. Given the severity of this global issue, we'd like to upscale this project. Firstly, we would buy a memorable domain that people could access worldwide. Next, as with any machine learning program, we would like to continue training our model in order for its accuracy levels to improve. Finally, we would partner with global organizations such as our local chapter of Goodwill, Free Geek, or the United Nations' Technology Bank to provide more computers to individuals living in areas without access to healthcare. Through these initiatives, we hope to significantly decrease the population of over 1 billion people living with diseases that could have been prevented or have yet to be diagnosed (World Health Organization).
