Inspiration
I was primarily inspired to create this game as, throughout my time in STEM, a common theme among individuals is struggling with mental health. As such, I hoped to bring together mental health, STEM, and whims into a singular project.
What it does
A Day in STEM provides an easily accessible storyline that others can enjoy at all times of day. Ultimately, the game shows that although we may not see it, our talents are valuable simply because they are ours.
How we built it
This project was built through Canva's presentation, effects/animation, and audio features. Through cleverly combining them, they created a unique format of game that could be easily interacted with by others.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge I ran into while creating my game was figuring out the logistics behind turning a presentation into a game style; however, through exploration of Canva's features, I managed to make it work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Ultimately, I am incredibly proud of my final result, as it took a lot of time and effort to figure out a realistic way of turning this from a simple presentation to a playable game. Throughout the course of the hackathon, I diligently created a storyline, created a unique appearance, and selected audio to accompany it, which ultimately adds to the overall playability and user experience as they navigate this digital world.
What we learned
By completing this project, I learned that with creativity and determination, we can cross bounds of what we may have originally thought possible. Before competing in this hackathon, I never thought about using Canva's "basic" features to do something else. I hadn't paused to try and add creativity to the space, but through participating, I saw that it is worthwhile to put effort into projects like these, as they truly open your mind and help make the world that much more unique.
What's next for A Day in STEM
Beyond this project, I hope to further develop A Day in STEM into a story that can be loved by all: a story that touches not only screens but hearts. Furthermore, I hope to potentially extend the storyline into different possible endings depending on what the user selects throughout the game to make it more unique to the individual and add to the worldbuilding. This can look like having sad versus happy endings, introducing more characters, or even introducing more areas and challenges that the player must navigate.
