Inspiration
In terms of the medium, I’ve always been inspired by beautiful typographic sites that tell stories through words paired with subtle design and animation. As for the content, the English language itself perpetually fascinates me. It’s amazing how, as a species, we’ve arrived where we are after centuries of different writing systems and technologies shaping the evolution of language.
This is a dry topic for most people, so I'm hoping that presented in the right way, I can share some of my own fascination and curiosity about the English language with others.
Generative AI is now pushing writing even further than the telegram, the typewriter, the computer, text messaging, or the internet ever did. While there's admittedly a lot I don’t love about AI as someone who writes for a living, the reality is that the cat is out of the bag. The most productive approach is to stay optimistic and figure out how to use these tools to augment human creativity instead of replacing it.
What it does
The project is an interactive timeline and quiz called A Brief History of the English Language. It walks people through major milestones in the evolution of English, with simple animations, clean typography, and short quizzes for fun.
How I built it
It’s built entirely with Bolt. I wrote detailed prompts describing the design, layout, and interactivity I wanted. For text, I edited code directly because it’s faster to tweak wording in code than to keep prompting small changes.
I’ve never been able to code complex CSS or animation myself, so it felt pretty great to work alongside an AI developer who could bring my vision to life.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge was the intro graphic. It took a lot of back and forth to get it looking right. The slide transitions and quiz formatting were also tricky to nail down at times, but compared to trying to build it all myself from scratch, this was much easier.
Accomplishments
I’m happy with how I was able to pull together a functioning, clean-looking site in about a week. I didn’t know about the hackathon until late, so just getting something live and polished in time feels like an accomplishment.
What I learned
I learned how powerful it is to combine a clear creative vision with AI tools. Even without strong coding skills, you can produce something professional if you’re willing to iterate and refine.
What's next for A Brief History of the English Language
I plan to keep improving the design, expand the content, and eventually add it to my personal website. Over time, I’d like it to become a deeper, more polished exploration of how English came to be and an exploration of the quirks of the language.
