Inspiration

A lot of AI tools try to do more: longer answers, step-by-step reasoning, always being available. That can be useful, but it can also make simple decisions feel heavier than they need to be.

I wanted to explore the opposite idea: What if an AI did less on purpose?

8-Ball came from everyday moments of uncertainty — deciding what to do next, what to focus on, or whether to act at all. In those moments, too much information can feel overwhelming. Instead of giving answers, the goal was to create a small, calm nudge that helps people pause and think for themselves.

What it does

8-Ball is a simple, reflective AI tool for decision moments. Users ask a question, and the system returns a short, human-like response designed to reduce overthinking, avoid long explanations, and encourage clarity without creating dependency.

To support intentional use, the app includes session limits that gently discourage repeated or impulsive questioning.

How we built it

8-Ball was built as a single-page web application with a focus on simplicity and clarity. The frontend is built with React and Vite and styled using Tailwind CSS. AI responses are generated through an external language model API with prompt constraints to keep replies short and conversational.

A lightweight serverless API stores anonymized interaction data in MongoDB Atlas for future analysis and iteration. Subtle gradients and motion effects are used to create a calm, distraction-free interface. The frontend and backend are kept separate to follow real-world best practices for security and scalability.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was resisting the urge to overbuild. Designing an AI that intentionally does less required constant refinement to keep responses useful without drifting into advice or philosophical explanations.

Another challenge was balancing a demo-friendly experience with responsible design. For the hackathon demo, interaction limits are adjusted to allow quick exploration while still demonstrating the idea of intentional constraints.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built an AI tool that stays simple on purpose
  • Designed responses that are short and calming
  • Added limits to prevent overuse and overthinking
  • Kept the app clean, focused, and easy to use
  • Turned a clear idea into a working product

What we learned

This project reinforced that good AI design isn’t just about model capability—it’s about boundaries. Limiting length, frequency, and tone can make AI feel more supportive and less overwhelming.

I also gained hands-on experience building a production-style architecture using serverless functions and a cloud database. Most importantly, I learned that less can be a powerful design choice.

What's next for 8-Ball: A Reflective AI for Better Decisions

Future iterations could explore:

  • personalized reflection styles
  • adaptive limits based on usage patterns
  • deeper analysis of how people phrase uncertainty
  • optional modes for different contexts (planning, creativity, daily decisions)

The core idea will remain the same: AI as a supportive presence, not an authority.
