Inspiration
Most personality tests are either free and shallow, or "premium" and unscientific. 64 Types uses peer-reviewed public-domain items (IPIP) and real norm samples (N = 410,376 for the facets). The remaining problem: 29 percentile scores are hard to read. People want to know what their combination means. That's what the AI is for, and PayPal makes paying for the full report a one-tap decision.
What it does
- Free 62-item test gives a 6-letter type (16 classic types x 2 extra research traits = 64 types), in 33 languages.
- The 116-item Deep Report scores 29 facets; the full report is a one-time $14.99.
- PayPal checkout: PayPal Smart Buttons on the report page. Orders are created and captured server-side with the PayPal Orders v2 API, so the price can't be changed from the browser. The purchase is stored as an order id and re-verified with PayPal whenever the report is opened.
- AI personal insight: after purchase, Cloudflare Workers AI (Llama 3.1 8B) reads the 29 facet percentiles and writes a short reading: 3 notable facet combinations and 3 practical suggestions, in the reader's language. The prompt contains only the scores and standard facet definitions, with strict rules: no diagnosis, no flattery, no claims beyond the data. Only verified buyers can call it.
How we built it
- Next.js static site on Cloudflare Pages; all API work in one Pages Function (/api/*).
- shared/paypal.ts: OAuth client-credentials token, POST /v2/checkout/orders and /v2/checkout/orders/{id}/capture; verification checks status COMPLETED, our SKU in custom_id and the exact USD amount.
- shared/insight.ts: Workers AI binding, prompt builder, and a paywall check that reuses the same PayPal verification.
- Contract tests mock the PayPal API and the AI binding (created, captured, underpaid, wrong product, pending, live vs sandbox, 402 without purchase).
Challenges we ran into
- One unlock flow for three payment paths (Lemon Squeezy, PayPal, app-store in-app purchase). PayPal orders get a pp_ prefix and /api/verify routes them, so nothing else had to change.
- Keeping the AI honest: personality data is easy to over-interpret, so the model only sees scores and facet definitions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A real, live product in 33 languages; PayPal adds one-tap checkout for people who won't type a card number.
- The AI runs on Workers AI's free allowance, so it adds a clear reason to buy at near-zero cost.
What we learned
Server-side order creation plus server-side verification is what makes a static site safe to sell from: the browser never decides the price or the unlock.
