What it does
4favorites is a daily game based around figuring out what film is missing from a users letterboxd top 4. you are given the option of clues to try and guess the film while gaining the most points possible.
How we built it
I used the TMDB api along with python to populate a mysql database, then using python along with html, css, and js created the working website.
Challenges we ran into
Originally I built a custom web scraper to get letterboxd user profile information but I ran into issues with cloudflare denials, so I had to pivot how i collected the profile information. The other major issue was turning a locally hosted site and database into a working website viewable from any device. Uploading the bones of the site was easy but my version of mysql was not compatible with the software i was using so i had to re import my data via vscode and the scraper I built after rebuilding the database in railway.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest thing i'm proud of is making a finished project, especially one I can send a link to my friends and show them! In the past I never was able to convert a local app to a working web app so this is a big step forward for me.
What we learned
web development is hard! some sites don't want you snooping around their data, and how to get a cloud database to link to my webapp
What's next for 4th favorite
I want to turn this into regular daily game for my friends and anyone who wants to play. I need more user information, and I need to build an archive page for past daily challenges.
