Inspiration

A member of our team works for a women’s health and motherhood non-profit called Childbirth Survival International. Hearing the struggles of different moms when going through early motherhood was something that none of the other team members had ever thought deeply about. As such, we were driven to educate more people in the general public about the adversities that new moms face, especially those of lower socioeconomic standing. We set out to develop a gameplay that was both immersive and educational.

What it does

4moms allows the user to play as 4 mother personas who have vastly different socio-economic circumstances. The website walks the user through a series of questions that pertain to motherhood and breastfeeding. With each mother, a different set of options are available. Each option also comes with a tid-bit of related information to educate the user. At the end of the game, the user is led to a page where they can either play again as another mother to experience different struggles, read more on relevant organizations, or donate to non-profits.

How we built it

We designed and prototype our idea using Figma. We considered the complications and benefits of building the web app using HTML, css, and javascript. Since this is our first Hackathon and we really wanted to learn something new from this project, we decided to use JavaScript, Node and express backend, a tech stack that most of our team is unfamiliar with. Despite the lack of experience, we did lots of research and were able to amply implement the web app.

Challenges we ran into

Most of our team is not familiar with EJS and the tech stack that we were using, which makes the development process more complicated.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Having our team members living in 3 different countries with different time zones, we are proud to be able to meet for most of the hackathon and effectively communicate.

What's next for 4Moms

We are planning to make the web app responsive so that mobile users can also access it. We will also collaborate with related non-profits in order to promote our website. After partnerships are set, we can explore the possibility of monetizing the website in order to generate a source of revenue.
